About This Place

Nestled in the heart of San Diego’s vibrant Gaslamp Quarter, barleymash offers a spirited fusion of American comfort food and an expertly curated bar experience that makes it a standout destination for brunch, casual dining, and lively evenings out. This bustling spot at 600 Fifth Ave boasts an atmosphere that effortlessly balances energetic warmth with a welcoming, relaxed vibe — perfect for anything from a spirited game day gathering to a leisurely Sunday feast.

Barleymash’s menu is a carnival of bold flavors and creative twists on classic American staples. Their San Diego Fries are legendary: house-cut fries piled high with tender red chili-braised short ribs, melted three-cheese blend, spicy guacamole, and salsa fresca, delivering a mouthwatering contrast of smoky, spicy, and fresh notes in every bite. Another must-try is the BarleyMacs, with standout choices like The Bleu Shroom, a luscious medley of wild mushrooms, caramelized onions, and bleu cheese crumbles smothered in a rich poblano beer cheese and pepper jack cheese sauce atop cavatappi pasta. It’s comfort food elevated to an art form.

The bar program here deserves special praise. Dynamic and inventive, it features classic cocktails with a twist like the zingy Apricot Bourbon Sour and a crowd-favorite Bloody Mary Bar — perfect for customizing your brunch experience. Beer lovers will appreciate Barleymash’s robust selection of local brews, including the popular Mother Earth Cali Creamin, ideally paired alongside crispy, double battered chicken tenders that are kissed with crunch and served with an irresistible quartet of sauces.

Diners rave about the Oven Roasted Beer-Brined Chicken Wings, especially the whiskey buffalo flavor, which delivers just the right amount of heat balanced by a complex depth of smoky sweetness. Another favorite that keeps locals coming back is the Surf and Turf Burger, marrying juicy grilled beef with decadent toppings that create layers of savory richness in every bite.

Service here is consistently warm and attentive, striking the perfect balance between professional and friendly — making every visit feel like catching up with old friends. One regular celebrates the “Sunday ritual” of unwinding here, captivated by the staff’s lively energy that never spirals into chaos but instead amplifies the overall experience. Sports enthusiasts will find the atmosphere equally engaging, with numerous TVs perfect for catching the game alongside some of the best wings in town.

While most leave impressed by the quality and creativity, a few note that some dishes can be a bit hefty or unevenly seasoned, reflecting the kitchen’s bold approach to generous portions and intense flavor combinations. Nevertheless, the overwhelmingly positive feedback underscores Barleymash as a neighborhood gem where great food, a stellar drink menu, and an inviting atmosphere intersect to create memorable, crave-worthy outings.

Whether you’re in the mood for a casual bite with friends, a satisfying brunch, or a vibrant night of drinks and eats, Barleymash stands as a testament to San Diego’s thriving culinary scene — a place where every dish feels crafted with care and every visit invites you to stay a little longer.

Stopped in to watch the end of the Ohio State/Michigan game (Go Buckeyes!) and enjoyed some of the best wings ever. Sports bar meets Food Network chef-inspired food. Great service.

Over the past year, Barleymash has become more than just a restaurant, it’s been a Sunday ritual for my friends and I. It’s a place to unwind. From the moment you walk in, the energy is warm, inviting, and effortlessly lively without ever feeling chaotic. The food is consistently outstanding. Every dish, whether it’s a perfectly executed brunch favorite, the indulgent Steak Dinner, or a perfectly cooked burger, reflects the attention to detail, creativity, and genuine care. The drinks are equally impressive, with a rotating selection of local beers and well-crafted cocktails that always hit the spot. What truly sets Barleymash apart, though, is the staff. A special shoutout is owed to the Sunday Bartenders, their professionalism, friendliness, and effortless ability to keep the vibe upbeat have made every Sunday amazing. They’re the heartbeat of the experience and deserve every bit of recognition. Every visit, they balance professionalism with friendliness, creating a space where you feel welcome and genuinely taken care of. The ambiance, the live music, the crowd, the communal energy, never fails to lift your spirits, making it the perfect spot to spend some time. Barleymash isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a cornerstone of the Gaslamp experience. To anyone reading this, treat yourself. It’s a gem in every sense of the word.

Dinner for 1 at the bar on a Thursday at 6p. Good: cocktails, beer menu, service, fun environment. Mediocre: food. I ordered the Champ burger with fries. The fries were cooked just beyond limp - not crispy at all. And unevenly seasoned. The burger was a great idea that was executed poorly; it was too big to get a bite of all the elements, so the eating experience began by just working through half the meat (under-seasoned) before finally getting to the onion straws and delicious spicy sauce that had only been sparingly applied to the top bun. I ended up pulling most of the pulled pork out of the bun just so I could taste all the good stuff in there. They need to work on this. Bottom line, I'd go back but I would definitely order a different menu option.

My FAVORITE place in Gaslamp!! The food here is always fresh and the portions are GENEROUS. I highly recommend the wings because the whiskey buffalo is fire! Also, this is one of the few places where a salad WILL fill you up. They come with delicious bread and always a 10/10. You can tell the food here is made with love and their condiments are homemade! This place is consistently exceeding my expectations with every season of menu they put out. They are currently on season 13 so I definitely recommend everyone try them out! Great place to catch a game with some delicious food! I come here at least twice a month :)

Came here on a Saturday before the Padres game and enjoyed the patio. My partner ordered a Zinfandel and I got a Mother Earth Cali Creamin Beer. Overall good service, nice TV's and good atmosphere. Also I saw someone's Chicken Tenders, they looked super super super crispy. If I were to go back here and have food, that is something I would definitely order. Also it came with 4 sauces and I really like that. I'll update my review if I ever get the Chicken Tenders.

I was told by a friend that I needed to do here. I did it and I’m so glad I did. Amazing food and drinks. I had the Ron Burgandy which is their take on an Old Fashioned and it was delicious! Also had the Bourbon BBQ burger which was awesome. Lots of TVs on for all the Saturday college football games. Service was outstanding. I can wait to go back and try all the other things. I just missed brunch so I have more reasons to return.

If you're in gas lamp, this is a staple of the bar scene! Mornings, lunch, dinner and dance. They've been great since I've moved to SD in 2014 and I still keep on coming here. They got a build your own bloody mary in the mornings, they play foot ball on Sundays, the food and drinks are great here.
